ABOUT THE KNOXVILLE OPERA GOSPEL CHOIR
The Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir exists to uplift, inspire, and connect communities through the power of gospel music. As an integral part of Knoxville Operaβs community engagement initiatives, the Choir brings together singers and musicians from a wide range of backgrounds to share meaningful performances that celebrate faith, culture, fellowship, and unity. Committed to artistic excellence, the Choir honors the rich traditions of gospel music and spirituals while embracing diverse musical influences and collaborative performance opportunities.
Our vision is to foster deeper community connections through music, expand the reach and visibility of gospel traditions throughout the region, and create inclusive performances that inspire audiences of all backgrounds. Through dynamic programming, artistic collaboration, and a spirit of service, the Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir strives to reflect the richness, diversity, and shared experiences of the communities it serves.
Founded in 2008 by Jeanie Turner Melton, the Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir began as a single concert and has since grown into one of Knoxville Operaβs most visible and impactful community programs. Today, the Choir features more than 35 singers and instrumentalists representing more than 20 churches across Knoxville, Blount County, and surrounding communities. Its members come from a wide range of backgroundsβincluding military veterans, opera and jazz singers, educators, healthcare professionals, and long-time church musiciansβunited by a shared love for gospel music, fellowship, and service.
The Choirβs signature event is the annual Knoxville Opera Goes to Church concert, a free celebration that brings together gospel music, spirituals, and other diverse musical traditions in a joyful and inspiring performance. In addition to this event, the Choir appears throughout the year at festivals, civic celebrations, and collaborative programs with community partners. The ensemble has performed at events presented by the NAACP, the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, the United Methodist Church General Conference, and the Big Ears Festival.
Under the leadership of Shawn Turner, the Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir continues to build on the strong foundation established by founder Jeanie Turner Melton while entering an exciting new chapter of artistic growth and expanded outreach. With a vision for the Choir to expand its membership, reach new audiences through travel and collaborative performances, and strengthen its presence throughout the region, Turnerβs leadership reflects the ensembleβs ongoing commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and the power of music to bring people together. Rooted in faith, fellowship, and artistic expression, the Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir continues to grow in both presence and purpose.
